Practicing French Gestures

Since the beginning of January, grade four students have been learning A LOT of new French vocabulary AND a lot of gestures to help them understand the meaning of the words. To assist students with learning all of the new vocabulary, videos are being posted for them to WATCH AND PRACTICE.

Weekly homework for all grade four French students is a minimum of 15 minutes of gesture practice twice a week. Parents are asked to note practice times in their child's planner AND initial them. Weeks are graded from Wednesday to Wednesday. Planners will be checked every Wednesday.

Parents: thank you in advance for your help and support!
Students: keep up the good work, as this will speed up our progress and allow us to start the play, 'Les Trois Petits Cochons!'

Wednesday Morning Devotions

In devotions this morning, 4V came to realize that the colder weather has brought both blessings and difficulties to the Lower Mainland. We're currently learning about weather in our science classes, and the snow has added an exciting dimension to our studies - however, through an insightful discussion, we have come to realize that the colder temperatures really affect the homeless people in our community. Students shared their first-hand experiences with the homeless in both Surrey and Vancouver. One particular story shared by a student has inspired me to carry extra granola bars in my purse so that I have something to give out when I see someone in need.

Service Hours Begin This Term

For many, the concept of service hours is a new one. This post is written to help both students and parents understand how this works.

Grade four students are asked to earn a total of 8 service hours between now and early March. Service hours can be earned at home, school or at church. Regular chores should not be counted as service. Some ideas include gardening, snow removal, washing the car, vacuuming out the car, organizing recycling, child minding, chores over and above ones that are regularly done at home, and helping out at church. There may also be opportunities to earn service hours at school doing small jobs for teachers or picking up garbage outside. The key is that students need to actively pursue opportunities rather than expect them to materialize.

We hope that this will help inspire our students to think beyond themselves and seek out opportunities to serve. Please contact your child's teacher if you have any questions.

Put Your Children to Work!
Middle school students are trying to raise money for Juan Calvino Christian School in Choluteca, Honduras. There is a competition for the month of December between the upper and lower floors to see who will raise the most money. Students are being encouraged to earn money and contribute it to our grade four jug. Our team is called Team Beim (after Mr. Beimers, our coach).

Mushroom walk through Hemlock Park

On Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011 the rain seemed to be holding off so Ms. Stegeman and Ms. D decided to take 4S for a mushroom walk in Hemlock Park. The amount of mushrooms we saw was amazing. We found at least ten different types. We collected a few in a basket to take back o school. We looked at them with our magnifying glasses. We also went to Ms. Stegeman’s house for a tour and snack. It was a great morning!

Today was the day! In conjunction with our habitats and communities unit, 4V spent some time observing the preferences of mealworms. We hypothesized together - would the mealworms prefer a dark or light environment? Would they choose a wet or dry environment? Turns out that the majority of the mealworms liked their environment dark and dry!

Burying the Clay Potsherds

4S digs a hole on the school grounds to bury their clay potsherds. Potsherds are broken pieces of pottery used to write on. They were used the same way as people use scrap paper today. They were very useful for students to practice their writing. In Palestine, there were many potsherds becasue the streeets were littered with broken pottery. Next week 4V will also dig a hole and do the same.

Sep. 26, 2011 An Exciting Morning at SCS

Last week people in my class and in other classes kept getting stung by wasps. Ben got stung in the leg four times. Caitlyn got stung in the leg two times, plus Steven’s hand got stung and it swelled very badly! There was this boy in the other class. He got stung five times in the back! Finally the teachers found the nest (an underground nest) in the forest. Mr. Nategaal called the Honey Bee Centre. Leanne came to our school and sucked out all the bees with a vacuum. Caleb, a grade seven student helped her. All the bees went into a bucket. After she was all done she came to our room with the wasps and talked about them a little bit. They will freeze the wasps and they are going to help people with allergies by using their venom to make anti-venom.

60 Minutes a Day

How much physical activity do children and youth need?

Children aged 5-11 and youth aged 12-17 should accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity daily. But more is even better!

What is moderate to vigorous aerobic activity?

On a scale of 0 to 10 (with 0 being completely at rest and 10 being absolute maximum effort), moderate-intensity aerobic activity is a 5 or 6. Kids will breathe harder and their hearts will beat faster. They should be able to talk, but not sing. Examples of moderate physical activity include walking quickly, skating, bike riding, and skateboarding.

To make the most of their physical activity, try to include...

vigorous-intensity activities at least three days per week

activities that strengthen muscle and bone at least three days per week (walking, running and jumping rope)

Ideas to get moving...

replace computer and TV time with something active

encourage students to join a school activity or team

learn which sports and activities they enjoy and find lessons or clubs

take kids to the playground or to the park to play

have them rake the leaves, shovel snow or carry the groceries

encourage them to dance to their favourite music

Health benefits include...

Our class visited the Coquitlam Watershed last week. What an amazing fieldtrip! We were so happy that we could get to explore God's creation on a beatiful, sunny day. When we arrived at the Watershed, we each got a nametag with the name of a plant or animal which we had to try and spot during our visit. The bus took us to the highest point from where we could look out over the watershed. Unfortunately, we didn't see a bear (the previous class did!) but we were lucky to spot the red-legged frog - thanks Justice! We went for a long walk through the amazing old growth forest; we were in awe of the huge trees, and laughed to see two centipedes kissing! We ended the day exploring the trails around Or Creek, from a specific person's point of view. The artists sat under the trees sketching what they saw, forest rangers used binoculars and magnifying glasses to find things, the dam builders enjoyed getting dirty while building their dam, and the navigators explored new areas with a compass in hand. I heard many of our students telling the guides: "This was the best field trip ever!" Take a look at the slideshow to share in our fieldtrip.

First Nations Visitor and Forest Art

On May 30, Mr. King (or Sierra’s dad), came in to tell us about First Nations People. He was half First Nations, and showed us very old artifacts such as a piece of rock used to grind corn and grain into cornmeal and flour. His paternal grandmother is alive today and is First Nations. She had lived in a hogan (that’s a traditional Navajo house). When he and his brother visited her to install a fridge and build a washroom (so she didn’t have to walk 100 yards to the outhouse), some strange things happened. A few days after they went to install the fridge, they saw that she had unplugged it. They asked why she had done it. She said that it was because the light was always on. They explained to her that there was a button and when the fridge door closes and hits the button, the light turns off. While they were there, they checked the washroom and found it being used as a storage room. She hadn’t lived with electricity or running water ever before, so she didn’t use them the way we do. Now she lives in a nursing home, as she is 98 years old.

At Fort Langley, we visited the blacksmith where we learned how to make hooks and that young boys at the age of 12 started working as a blacksmith.
We got to carry bails of fur around the whole fort. The way to carry fur bails is to carry it like a backpack. There are two straps that you hold on to and you just put it on your back. The fur bails were actually, surprisingly light.
We learned about where the servant’s quarters were, how they accommodated all of their belongings, and how different kinds of servants had different kinds of homes. The servants that were from Quebec had tin plates and not much fine china. The servants from England had fine china and a four poster bed for the adults to sleep in as the children had a bed without four posts. The toys that the children had were handmade and some of them even taught the kids a skill that they would need later on.
The Fort Langley experience was a success and it was a lot of fun, even though it was pouring rain.

Some Grandparents came early and we showed them our work. They are really good at math. They have different lives than us. Some take a tram and a bus to school. We also interviewed them. Some were born in different places. There were different worksheets to do with them. Some of them had different detentions than us. They had less homework and some had none. Last Thursday, 4L had a potlatch lunch to mark the end of our First Nations unit. What a feast it was! The students decided to try everything on the menu, and they loved it! We had Salmon, beef jerky, cranberries, dried apricots and dried apple rings, pop corn, and fruit candy. However, the favourite was definitely the warm, fresh bannock which Mrs. Kooger cooked in class. She brought maple syrup and strawberry jam to eat with the bannock. The students were lining up for seconds! Thank you, 4L, for participating in the Potlatch, and for helping to make it a success!

We are 4L and we did a big progect on First Nations.First,we wrote our paragraphs. Second,we made our articfacts from plasticine,beads,bamboo sticks,popsicle sticks,glue,string,fabric,hay,feathers,pipe cleaners,felt,shoe polish.Third,we typed our paragraphs and we printed them.Fourth,we made our maps. We coloured the area where our First Nations people live. Then our groups put it all together on posters. The group decorated their posters and we put it on display and told the class about it. We had a museum party. Now we are going to display it in the Library. Come take a look at them!!!

Today we had crazy hat day.There were a lot of crazy, really weird hats. A lot of people were crazy about crazy hat day. There were a lot of hats that had lots of bling and even normal hats with tons of abnormal stuff piled on them. Today people wore super crazy hats and some were just plain. There were oversized hats that covered people's faces so we couldn't see who it was at all! There were over 100 people that wore hats. Even the teachers wore funny hats. A lot of people wore fuzzy, scratchy, fluffy and cute little hats. There were hats with fuzzy stuffed snakes and headphones stuck on them too! I loved the hats that were sparkling whith fake gems on them.There were oversized and funny looking cowboy hats. There were two little dudes wearing the same hats.There were also hats that looked like princess hats that were made out of paper! And it was raining so they got soaked. It was quite funny seeing all the different hats.

On February 1, 2011 we went on a long walk down 160 St. with our grade 8 buddies. On that walk we were picking up garbage that we found to be kind to God's earth. Some people found a chair, shopping cart, some dirty pipes and a tire!! It was super awesome and also super funny. We talked a lot !!!!!!!!!!! Also Kayla found two bowls of rice and said "Free food!". There were tecnically 2 groups of people!

Museum of Anthropology

Last week on Friday, grade four went to the Museum of Anthropology. It was supposed to be forty-five minutes, but it turned out to be one hour and fifteen minutes on the bus. We learned about First Nations people and their natural ways. They were intellectual and responsive to their surroundings. Cedar trees were essential to them for the reason that they made baskets, clothing, canoes, mats, houses, ropes and further worthwhile belongings. Individuals made totem poles as their address, to demonstrate their treasures, and to tell the family’s story. We saw the tiniest totem pole in the world. It was on a toothpick. The MOA was a breathtaking experience. Everyone had a remarkable time.

Today (1/11/11), we did a science workshop on light. We did many experiments. We did an experiment that when you spin the paper it turns different colours. Another one was we shone light on a mirror and reflected it at targets that Micron Mark showed us. We did one that we had to put on special glasses, he turned off the light and we saw a lot of different colours on one thing! There was one where there was a periscope that if you look in it you can look in any direction if you turn the periscope. It was a really good time!! IT WAS AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:). TOTALLY SWEET!!:).
