Service Hours for Term Two
Service Hours Begin This Term
For many, the concept of service hours is a new one. This post is written to help both students and parents understand how this works.
Grade four students are asked to earn a total of 8 service hours between now and early March. Service hours can be earned at home, school or at church. Regular chores should not be counted as service. Some ideas include gardening, snow removal, washing the car, vacuuming out the car, organizing recycling, child minding, chores over and above ones that are regularly done at home, and helping out at church. There may also be opportunities to earn service hours at school doing small jobs for teachers or picking up garbage outside. The key is that students need to actively pursue opportunities rather than expect them to materialize.
Every time your child earns an hour of service time please send a note to school so the teachers can track them.
We hope that this will help inspire our students to think beyond themselves and seek out opportunities to serve. Please contact your child's teacher if you have any questions.

Buddy Event - 4V and Grade Nines
Another school-wide buddy event was held this past Friday. It was AWESOME! The grade fours got together with their grade nine buddies to work on creating a book for our sister school in Kabala, Sierra Leone. In 4V, our book was based on the words of the song, 'What a Wonderful World.' Buddies were each given a line or two of the song to illustrate. The pages turned out great!

Netbooks in French Class
It was very exciting to incorporate the Netbooks into our French class the other day. Students were given an opportunity to practice their skills using the links on the French blog. These links are available for use at home, too! The French blog is linked to this blog - it is the third link from the top.

Bye, Viper the Salamander!!
Grade 4D released Viper into his natural habitat after having him in our classroom for a couple of days. We were sad to see him go, but he was quite happy to be back in his real home. Bye, Viper!

Story time with Mr. B
Mr. Beimers reads to the grade 4's on Thursday afternoons. Right now he is reading "The Fire Within" by Chris D'Lacey. It's a great way to spend some time on Thursday afternoons with all the grade 4's and Mr. B. Thanks Mr. Beimers!!!
Creation Enjoyers!
All this rain hasn't been getting the grade 4's down; they've been taking advantage of this weather by taking part in building trenches for water flow, sticking their feet in puddles, and building dams at recess! Those who have been wearing their rubber boots have really been able to be a part of the fun all while keeping their feet dry! Keep up the Creation Enjoying!
4D Visit their Buddies!
4D had a wonderful visit with their buddies at the Primary Campus. We were dressed up fancy for formal day and our buddies had crazy hair for crazy hair day! We made animals for Noah's ark. It was so fun to spend time with our little friends and we can't wait till our next visit!

Field Trip This Week!
The grade fours will be visiting the Coquitlam Watershed on Tuesday and Wednesday. The weather forecast is looking pretty good right now, but as we know, that could change! 4S, along with part of 4V will be going on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the rest of 4V will join 4D for the day. Students are asked to prepare for the field trip in the following ways:
1 - Dress for a day outside. We will be heading into the forest which includes some steep terrain. Temperatures will be cooler, so students are advised to wear layers and sturdy footwear.
2 - Pack a litterless lunch. If that is not possible, students will be required to take any garbage home again.
3 - Arrive at school on time. They are sending a bus to come to the school to pick us up right after attendance is taken. We will be returning at approximately 2:30pm.
Students are allowed to bring personal cameras, but are asked to leave any other personal electronics at home. This includes phones and game consoles.

4V Visits the Pond!
As part of our learning about habitats and communities, 4V spent most of the afternoon visiting the pond at the back of the school property. (Dominic had more of an interactive visit with the pond!) At one point, a frog was captured - but soon escaped, much to the dismay of the class. A big thanks to Mrs. Stegeman for leading 4V on this adventure!

A Few Grade 4 Reminders
The grade four teachers would really appreciate your help in ensuring that your child is as prepared as possible for the school year. Could you please make sure that your child has...
1 - School P.E. shirt and shorts labelled with at least their last name.
2 - Suitable running style shoes for indoor P.E. - also known as 'indoor shoes.' (Fitness blocks are on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so it would be helpful if suitable running style shoes were worn to school on those days.)
3 - A reusable water bottle.
4 - A recorder for music class.
5 - An earthquake comfort kit.
Thank you!

WOW - We're Back!
What a great morning! It appeared chaotic at first, but once the grade fours were able to find their lockers and desks, things settled down quite a bit. Our prayer is that our students felt welcome in their new school / campus. We are thankful that we can welcome a total of 12 new students to grade four. SO EXCITING! Here's a picture of each of the grade four classrooms taken at about 7:30 this morning.

Fort Langley Field Trip - March 6
Have what it takes to be a fur trader? Build a bucket, watch a blacksmith demonstration, and carry a fur bale. Taste life without electricity or privacy in the Servants’ Quarters. If you think you can do it, sign a five-year company contract with pen and ink in the Big House. Find out how the fur trade led to the British proclaiming BC a Crown Colony at Fort Langley in 1858.
We are in need of three parents from each class to help lead us through the fort and come with us on the bus. We will take the first three volunteers who respond via email or a note in their child's planner. (We can take a few additional parents if they are willing to pay the $6.55 themselves.)
The plan is to leave the middle campus by bus at 9:10am and return at approximately 12:30 pm.

Practicing French Gestures
Since the beginning of January, grade four students have been learning A LOT of new French vocabulary AND a lot of gestures to help them understand the meaning of the words. To assist students with learning all of the new vocabulary, videos are being posted for them to WATCH AND PRACTICE.
Weekly homework for all grade four French students is a minimum of 15 minutes of gesture practice twice a week. Parents are asked to note practice times in their child's planner AND initial them. Weeks are graded from Wednesday to Wednesday. Planners will be checked every Wednesday.
Parents: thank you in advance for your help and support!
Students: keep up the good work, as this will speed up our progress and allow us to start the play, 'Les Trois Petits Cochons!'

Wednesday Morning Devotions
In devotions this morning, 4V came to realize that the colder weather has brought both blessings and difficulties to the Lower Mainland. We're currently learning about weather in our science classes, and the snow has added an exciting dimension to our studies - however, through an insightful discussion, we have come to realize that the colder temperatures really affect the homeless people in our community. Students shared their first-hand experiences with the homeless in both Surrey and Vancouver. One particular story shared by a student has inspired me to carry extra granola bars in my purse so that I have something to give out when I see someone in need.
