Service Hours Begin This Term!

For many, the concept of service hours is a new one. This post is written to help both students and parents understand how this works.

Grade four students are asked to earn a total of 8 service hours between now and early March. Service hours can be earned at home, school or at church. Regular chores should not be counted as service. Some ideas include gardening, snow removal, washing the car, vacuuming out the car, organizing recycling, child minding, chores over and above ones that are regularly done at home, and helping out at church. There may also be opportunities to earn service hours at school doing small jobs for teachers or picking up garbage outside.

The key is that students need to actively pursue opportunities rather than expect them to materialize.
Every time your child earns an hour of service time please send a note to school so the teachers can track them. We hope that this will help inspire our students to think beyond themselves and seek out opportunities to serve. Please contact your child's teacher if you have any questions.

4V - Energy Shift Workshop

Energy Shift 4 Workshop

A huge thank you to Miss Lamb who visited each of the three grade four classes today!  Miss Lamb presented Surrey's Energy Shift 4 - a program developed by the city of Surrey to provide students with an opportunity to explore renewable and non-renewable energy sources as well as energy conservation.  We learned about the connection between energy, greenhouse gases and climate change.  The highlight of the workshop was building solar powered cars!

Opportunity to Be a Blessing!

Surrey Christian School is partnering with the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program this year.  Each grade has been assigned an item to collect for the program.  Grade four has been asked to collect jars of store bought jam.  If you are able to help us help the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program, please send along some jam with your child.

4SA in October/November

Remembrance Day Ceremony

As you know our story-line  this year is Journey Together to Discover God's World. Part of our journey was leading a Remembrance Day chapel where we helped others remember the many men and women who sacrificed their lives fighting for freedom. We never want another world war. We are working on peaceful solutions to the conflicts in our own life. We counted 118,000 red squares to represent all the lives that were lost during the many wars. We poured the squares slowly on the table in front of the school populations so they would have a visual as they remembered as well. BElwo is a short video of our chapel.

We illustrated In Flanders Fields with our own art so that others too could see the importance of remembering. This will be featured in our next video.

Enjoy!

4V - Feed Peter Fish!

In 4V, we are exploring the idea that we are blessed to be a blessing.  We are learning that many people around the world do not live the same kind of life that we live.  For the next month, we are collecting coins and bills in a Peter Fish just like the one in the picture above.  Our goal is use this money to bless others.  A number of thoughtful ideas have already been discussed as potential options!  Students are encouraged to bring their own money - whether it is from their piggy bank or earned doing extra chores.  We will be collecting until December 8.

DRESS CODE FOR BACK TO THE CROSS MUSICAL

All grade four students need to bring the following items to school BY MARCH 28 in preparation for the Easter musical...

All choir members need:
 1) A PLAIN WHITE, short sleeved, loose fitting t-shirt. (No words or designs please. Students won’t be able to wear t-shirts backwards or inside out due to some of the choreography.)

 2) One fingerless glove.  They can be long or short gloves.  Bright colours would be great if possible since this is for the 1980s song.

 3) A pair of blue full length jeans - this doesn't need to come to school until the dress rehearsals on Monday, April 3.

 4) Dark solid coloured socks. (Students won’t be wearing shoes on the risers.)

5) A bandana.

4V Participates in Surrey's Energy Shift 4 Workshop

Congratulations to Matthew, Luke and Andrew for being the first group to successfully construct a solar powered car during our workshop today.  We learned a lot about the different energy sources that are available to us, as well as how choosing renewable energy is better for our planet in the long run.
