Our Salmon!

Come look at our salmon in 4D! We are raising salmon and studying their life cycle.
The first stage of a salmon is the egg, then the alevin, then they move on to fry, then the smolt, and again move on to adults.
Every day we take a peek and see how the eyed eggs are doing. We test the pH level of the water about 3 times a week to make sure the water is safe for the salmon to grow in. It looks like they are doing very good.
When Mrs. Lin (the lady who dropped  the salmon eggs off at the beginning of January) came in and put the salmon eggs in the tank, she put in 48 and  2 have died (so far). The Salmon were supposed to hatch on Sunday January 27th, but they haven’t yet! We are anxiously waiting for them to hatch into alevin!
We’ve had lots of classes come in very excited to look at our salmon, so you should come too!

4D, 4S & 4V - Practicing French Gestures

Since the beginning of January, grade four students have been learning A LOT of new French vocabulary AND a lot of gestures to help them understand the meaning of the words. To assist students with learning all of the new vocabulary, videos are have been posted on the French blog for them to WATCH AND PRACTICE.

Weekly homework for all grade four French students is a minimum of 15 minutes of gesture practice twice a week. Parents are asked to note practice times on the monthly calendar in their child's planner AND initial them. Weeks are graded from Wednesday to Wednesday. Planners will be checked every Wednesday morning.

Parents: thank you in advance for your help and support!
Students: keep up the good work, as this will speed up our progress and allow us to start the play, 'Les Trois Petits Cochons!'

PSST... SPREAD THE NEWS!

On January 23, SCS will be hosting an Open House at all three campuses.  Please tell your neighbours and friends to stop by any campus from 9am to 12pm.  Surrey Christian is a great school and we want everyone to visit and see us in action!  In the evening, there will be a parent-information fair at the secondary campus from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.  Anyone interested in learning more about our preschool through grade 12 programs is invited!

Grade 4 Learning Links Blog

Graph of most popular countries among blog viewers
Just a bit of an update about the practice blog.  Our audience now includes people in Madagascar, Germany, Saudi Arabia and the United States!  So cool!  I wonder what brought them to our blog?

Approximately 50 new links were added over the Christmas break.  If you haven't spent much time on the practice blog, please take some time to do so!  Grade fours are transitioning to multiplication facts this term.  There are lots of links to help learn them!  It would be great to set some time aside a few times a week to practice math facts.  Recording your progress in your planner or on the calendar in the kitchen is a good idea, too!

Celebration of Cultures Dinner

Our Celebration of Cultures dinner is coming up in 3 weeks on Wednesday, January 30. This event celebrates the diversity within our school. With the numerous countries represented, families are encouraged to bring a dish that represents their country. Some families dress up in their national costume and some families perform. It is a fun filled evening and we would love you to join us for this event. Continue to check the school website and the school newsletter for more information.

This year we also decided to have each table decorated by different countries. We would like to borrow any item you have at home that represents your country that is not an heirloom or super fragile. If you have something please bring it to school. Ms. Atagi will return it to after the long weekend (due to the January 31, February 1 Pro-D days.) The dinner is going to be held here at the Middle Campus.

Swimming Lessons for Grade Four

As part of our Active Living component in PE and the Middle Campus Exploratory Program, we have a wonderful opportunity to take our grade four students to the Surrey Sports and Leisure Centre for swimming lessons. The following Fridays are scheduled: February 8, 15, 22, and March 1.

CCSTA buses will be booked and pick up all grade 4 students at 12:10pm. Swimming lessons for one group will go from 12:30-1:00pm and then the other group will be from 1:00-1:30. We will get out of the pool at 2:10pm and be on the buses by 2:25pm. When not in lessons, students have that time to swim and play on their own.

We are asking parents to supplement costs for these lessons. Please send a cheque (written to Surrey Christian School) for $10.00 with the attached page indicating the swimming level of your child. If this causes you undue financial hardship please let your child’s teacher or Mr. Beimers know.

Letter went home today.

If you can’t remember or don’t know your child's swimming level, please refer to this website for a description of each level (or Google the Red Cross swimming levels)

Please return consent form, swimming level information sheet and money ($10.00) to school by Wednesday, January 16, 2013.
