Service Hours Begin This Term!

For many, the concept of service hours is a new one. This post is written to help both students and parents understand how this works.

Grade four students are asked to earn a total of 8 service hours between now and early March. Service hours can be earned at home, school or at church. Regular chores should not be counted as service. Some ideas include gardening, snow removal, washing the car, vacuuming out the car, organizing recycling, child minding, chores over and above ones that are regularly done at home, and helping out at church. There may also be opportunities to earn service hours at school doing small jobs for teachers or picking up garbage outside.

The key is that students need to actively pursue opportunities rather than expect them to materialize.
Every time your child earns an hour of service time please send a note to school so the teachers can track them. We hope that this will help inspire our students to think beyond themselves and seek out opportunities to serve. Please contact your child's teacher if you have any questions.

Reading Link Challenge 2018-2019

Students in grades 4 and 5 are invited to participate in Reading Link Challenge at Surrey Christian School. Grade 4 meetings will begin on Monday - December 3 during first recess in the Learning Commons. The first competition happens in March, so students have time to prepare and practice using the six featured novels (see 'Titles' tab in link below). This is an opportunity for students to improve skills in teamwork and reading for retention. The school has nine copies of each title so there should be enough to go around. Extra copies are available at the public library! Questions/comments? Please contact Donna Klomps or Jen VanderBeek

Invitation to Participate in a Water Audit

The grade fours recently participated in a Water Wise workshop.  We learned a lot about how we use water as well as how often we waste water.  Did you know that the average person in the Lower Mainland uses about 400 litres of water per day????  Sounds crazy, but it's true!

Students are invited to participate (with their parents help) in an online water audit.  For each entry received, there will be a chance for the student's class to win a pizza party!  Click on the link below if you want to participate.

4V - Surrey Art Gallery

We spent the first hour of our time at the gallery doing a self-guided tour of the 'Many Visions, Many Versions: Art from Indigenous Communities in India' exhibit. This exhibit features the work of twenty-four contemporary artists from four major indigenous artistic traditions in India: the Gond and Warli communities of Central India, the Mithila region of Bihar, and the narrative scroll painters of West Bengal. Surrey Art Gallery is the only stop in Canada. It was exciting to view such a wide variety of art and think about the different materials that were used to create each piece.

April led us through our clay workshop where we had a chance to create some art of our own - a mask! The masks are currently air drying at school, and will later be fired in the kiln and turned into green ware. The last step will be to decorate them. A huge thank you to our parents for helping us out today, and to April for teaching us how to create with clay!
