Canada Day Challenge 2014
Proudly presented by the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Canada Day Challenge invites youth between 8 and 18 years old (who live in Canada) to express their pride in being Canadian by submitting an entry inspired by the theme -
-DRAW IT! (submit a poster design)
-SNAP IT! (submit digital photographs)
-WRITE IT! (submit a piece of creative writing)
Participation can be through schools, clubs, associations, or individual interest! On the road to Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017, the Canada Day Challenge is an excellent opportunity for young people to explore Canada’s history, culture and identity and to celebrate everything that makes Canada the united, strong and free country it is today. This year, we also encourage students to learn more about the defining moments that helped to shape our country. For example, in 2014, Canada will mark the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown and Quebec Conferences. These two conferences laid the foundations for Confederation in 1867 and what would eventually become Canada.

4S found this huge round piece of tubing in the ditch on the playground and decided to bring it into the classroom. After a few days Ms. Stegeman suggested we make a list of things we could do with it. We voted on it as a class and decided to surprise Mr. Beimers with it. We sneaked into his office and left it there with a note. It was so big that it hardly fit through the door. It filled up his whole office. What fun! Will he figure out where it came from?

Field Trip to Coquitlam Watershed
When?
4S -Sep. 19 and 4V- Sep. 26 8:45-2:40
How? A special bus picks us up and takes us to the watershed.
Why?
To explore watersheds and discover connections. The Coquitlam Watershed is a special place with unique treasures. It is a place where few people go, wildlife abounds, trees tower in mountains and valleys and water moves through natural landscapes to our water supply system. We plan to see the dam and learn how water gets from the reservoir to our tap. We plan to explore what makes watershed ecosystems important through fun, student-centered activities. We plan to make connections between healthy ecosystems and a healthy water supply. Once we’ve experienced the magic of this area, we will be reminded of our special day, every time we turn on the tap!
Each class can only take three adults so talk to your child's teacher if you are keen to go.

A Message from Mr. Stuart...
I will be working with your child and his/her classmates in a physical education setting for one block each week. It is important that your child is prepared with proper indoor and outdoor running shoes, approved Falcon t-shirt, Falcon shorts and/or track pants. If you have any questions concerning this important aspect of educating for wholeness, please feel free to contact me through your child's homeroom teacher or directly at dstuart@surreychristian.com throughout the school year.
A few important physical aspects that you will need to model and support your child with this year.
1. Daily physical activity (recommended 1 hour minimum each day)
2. Drink water many times daily - avoid drinks with sugar added
3. Proper well-balanced diet
4. Sleep
It is an honour for me to share my passion for this area with families at Surrey Christian. God has given us all amazing bodies to care for. Let's all make it a priority to make it an active year.

Annnddd They're Off!
Well, the salmon are off to fend for themselves! We had great weather for the salmon release! We went to Tynehead hatchery along with 3L, as they had been raising salmon at the primary as well, and had a wonderful (and sad) time saying good bye to our Salmon friends.
Good-Bye Salmon!
We are sadly releasing the salmon at Tynehead hatchery today! We've had them since they were eyed-eggs and now they have hatched, grown and developed into wonderful little fry! It's been a long journey and we are sad to have them leave our class! Pictures of the release to follow!

4V Learns to Play Ultimate Frisbee
On Friday, two grade 12 students (Jake and Kyle) came to visit 4V and teach us all about ultimate frisbee. After spending some time in a warm-up game of 'British Bulldog,' we practiced throwing and catching the disc in small groups. Jake and Kyle did a great job teaching us all about the rules of the game, and then coached us through a few practice games. Students quickly realized that this is very much a running game!
Student Led Conferences
This past Wednesday, students had the opportunity to share their learning and reflect on the past seven (almost eight!) months. Parents were invited to spend time perusing school work and participate in learning activities in the classroom. Students did a great job leading their conferences and taking ownership of their learning!

Drivers Needed!
Each class will be visiting the Surrey Museum over the next few weeks.
We will be participating in the 'People of the Land' experience.
Our plan is to explore the BC West Coast First Nations traditions of resource gathering. As well, we will learn why the cedar tree is known as the “Tree of Life” and try cedar weaving, then enjoy a traditional feast of berries and salmon.
All three field trips will take place on Tuesdays from 12:30pm to 2:00pm at the Surrey Museum. We will be departing from the middle campus at 12:00pm.
If you are able to help us out by driving, please send an email or note (via your child's planner) to your child's classroom teacher. Please indicate how many children you can take.
