4S & 4V - French Gesture Practice

We are beginning the AIM portion of our French program this week!  Grade four students will be learning A LOT of new French vocabulary AND a lot of gestures to help them understand the meaning of the words. To assist students with learning all of the new vocabulary, VIDEOS HAVE BEEN POSTED ON THE SCS MIDDLE SCHOOL FRENCH BLOG for them to WATCH AND PRACTICE.  (To get to the French blog, click on the link found under 'LINKS' at the top right section of this blog.  The videos are found under the 'Unit 1' heading.)  Students each have a vocabulary package as well with all of the vocabulary we will be learning over the next six months.  Please help your child remember to bring their vocab packages to school for their Wednesday and Friday French classes.

Weekly homework for all grade four French students is a minimum of 30 minutes of gesture practice per week.  It would be helpful if that time were spread over two or three days, rather than one straight half hour of practice.  Parents are asked to note practice times on the monthly calendar in their child's planner AND initial them. Weeks are graded from Wednesday to Wednesday. Planners will be checked every Wednesday morning.  Gesture practice should entail watching the video, repeating each word in both French and English as well as performing the correct gesture.

Parents: thank you in advance for your help and support!
Students: keep up the good work, as this will speed up our progress and allow us to start the play, 'Les Trois Petits Cochons!'

December in 4S

Service Hours Begin This Term!

For many, the concept of service hours is a new one. This post is written to help both students and parents understand how this works.

Grade four students are asked to earn a total of 8 service hours between now and early March. Service hours can be earned at home, school or at church. Regular chores should not be counted as service. Some ideas include gardening, snow removal, washing the car, vacuuming out the car, organizing recycling, child minding, chores over and above ones that are regularly done at home, and helping out at church. There may also be opportunities to earn service hours at school doing small jobs for teachers or picking up garbage outside.

The key is that students need to actively pursue opportunities rather than expect them to materialize.
Every time your child earns an hour of service time please send a note to school so the teachers can track them. We hope that this will help inspire our students to think beyond themselves and seek out opportunities to serve. Please contact your child's teacher if you have any questions.

Big Buddies Christmas Decorating Afternoon

This past Friday our big buddies came for a visit from the secondary campus.  We spent about an hour together making snowflakes, chatting and colouring.  It was a relaxing afternoon!  We are thankful for our buddies and wish them all a wonderful Christmas!

4S Receives an Email from the City of Surrey

Earth-Keepers

On Nov. 3, 4S went on a mushroom walk to Hemlock Park. In the park, we came upon a huge pile of garbage. We were picking up garbage along the way but could not manage this large amount (see picture). We decided to write a letter to the City of Surrey. Upon returning to the classroom, one of our students began writing and collected the signatures of the class. Ms. Stegeman added a picture and map and sent it off.

We were happy to receive an email from the City of Surrey today. Here’s what it said:

To the grade 4 class at Surrey Christian School: (it listed all our names)

Thank you for reporting the garbage pile that was illegally dumped in Hemlock Park. We have sent a professional work crew to go and clean up that mess. We are disappointed when some people break bylaws and disrespect protected parks by dumping garbage, but we greatly appreciate it when responsible members of our community (like yourselves) let us know about it so we can clean it up.

Thank you again for caring about our parks and protected natural areas.

Can you find the cat camouflaged in this picture?  Camouflage in animals is a structural and sometimes behavioural form of adaptation.  Pretty awesome!

A Message for the Parents of 4S in case you Missed the Meet the Teacher night.

Tynehead Park 4S

Creation Enjoying AND Community Building!

Ms. Hofstede led our assembly this morning and instead of our more traditional chapel, she opted to organize a MASSIVE photo scavenger hunt!  It was a BLAST!  All of the grades 1-7 students were organized into small mixed groups and given the task of collecting pictures of a set list of items that Ms. Hofstede provided.  It was a huge success, and a fun way for students to get to know each other!

Terry Fox Buddy Event

Last week Wednesday morning, the entire school got together to remember Terry Fox and his efforts to raise money to help fund cancer research.  Mr. Stuart shared a video with us that inspired us to never give up, even when times get tough.  We also spent some time walking or running around the soccer field with our big buddies from the high school.

Coquitlam Watershed Field Trip

Field Trip
to the
Coquitlam Watershed

4S on Wednesday,  September 23
4T on Monday, October 5
4V on Wednesday, October 7

from 8:55 am - 2:30 pm

A bus operated by metro Vancouver will transport us.

Exploring the Watersheds and Discovering Connections

We plan to experience this special place and discover its unique treasures. This is a place where few people go, wildlife abounds, trees tower in mountains and valleys and water moves through natural landscapes to our water supply system.

We will hop on the ‘water’ bus, see the dam, learn how water gets from reservoir to tap and explore what makes watershed ecosystems important through fun, student-centered activities.

Students will make connections between healthy ecosystems and a healthy water supply. Once they've experienced the magic, they will be reminded of their special day, every time they turn on the tap!

Mr. Beimers Gets a HAIRCUT!

SCS elementary students did a remarkable job in raising money to support students at our sister schools in Honduras and Sierra Leone! More than $9300 was raised through the K-3 'Loonies and Toonies of Love' and the 4-7 '18 for 18' campaigns this month! SO AWESOME! Mr. Beimers honoured his promise today to shave his head if the students collected $5000!

Special Guests

The grade fours were visited today by three guests originally from Haida Gwaii.  Pastor Bruce Brown shared his story of his experiences in more than one residential school.  He was joined by his daughter Monica and his grandson, Gavin.  The three of them sang a few songs for us as well as answered some of the questions we had.  We really appreciated their visit today!

4S & 4V - We CAN Make a Difference!

The grade fours are invited to help raise funds at the Kids for Kabala Garage Sale on Saturday, May 23 by bringing in donations of bulk candy and snack sized Ziploc bags.  The plan is to collect as much candy and bags as we can between Monday, May 11 and Wednesday, May 20.  The students will make the candy bags for the garage sale on May 21 and 22.  All candy and Ziploc donations will help to generate larger cash donations that will then help to support students in our sister schools in Honduras and Sierra Leone.

Thursday Night! Spring Concert!

The grade fours have been working very hard to prepare for this Thursday evening's Spring concert! Be sure to arrive early to get the best seats!  Students need to be at the church no later than 6:30 pm.  Based on the rehearsal today, seats near the middle of the sanctuary will allow best viewing of the grade fours during the concert.

4V Field Trip - Surrey Museum

4V is in need of parent chaperones / drivers for our field trip to the Surrey Museum NEXT WEEK TUESDAY (April 21).  Students will be participating in the First Nations experience which will involve rotating through a series of stations including cedar weaving, a tour of First Nations artifacts in the museum, a multimedia presentation in the auditorium and closing with a mini-potlatch experience.

Our plan is to leave the school at 12 noon to be at the Surrey Museum in time for our 12:30 pm appointment.  If you are willing and able to drive, please send Miss V. an email or a note in your child's planner stating how many students you can take (seat belts needed).  We should be back at the school at approximately 2:30 pm.  Thanks!
