Service Hours Begin This Term

For many, the concept of service hours is a new one. This post is written to help both students and parents understand how this works.

Grade four students are asked to earn a total of 8 service hours between now and early March. Service hours can be earned at home, school or at church. Regular chores should not be counted as service. Some ideas include gardening, snow removal, washing the car, vacuuming out the car, organizing recycling, child minding, chores over and above ones that are regularly done at home, and helping out at church. There may also be opportunities to earn service hours at school doing small jobs for teachers or picking up garbage outside.

The key is that students need to actively pursue opportunities rather than expect them to materialize.
Every time your child earns an hour of service time please send a note to school so the teachers can track them. We hope that this will help inspire our students to think beyond themselves and seek out opportunities to serve. Please contact your child's teacher if you have any questions.

4V Opportunity to Serve Others

This morning in chapel, we were visited by a guest speaker who works with churches to support refugees as they settle in Canada. We learned that many of the refugees are coming to Surrey and that there are actions we can take to help! 4V would love to create a welcome basket for a new family to Canada. We are hoping that 4V students will talk with their parents/guardians and decide on an item that they would be willing to provide for the welcome basket. Please note that it is VERY important that we stick to the size and quantity that is outlined on the document. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

Important Update for Parents and Students of 4SA and 4V

Our field trips to the Coquitlam Watershed have been changed as a result of a cougar spotted in and around the area we were scheduled to visit.  No worries!  We are going to now visit the Lower Seymour Watershed instead.  The previous blog post about how to best prepare for the field trip is still relevant.  Please pray for good weather next week!  We are all really looking forward to spending the day in God's creation!

Terry Fox Run - September 29

Our big buddies from the secondary campus visited us today and we spent some time walking and running together in honour of Terry Fox. Students are invited to bring a $1.00 to school and make a donation to further the cancer research being done in British Columbia. (Thanks again to Mr. Fernhout for another great video!)

4V Wonderings About Connected Moon and Earth Patterns

4V spent time today pondering the following BIG IDEA...

"The motion of the Earth and the moon cause observable patterns that affect living and non-living things."

Some of the student wonderings included:
I wonder why seasons only last a few months.
I wonder why only some places in the world experience four seasons.
I wonder which places in the world experience something other than 4 seasons.
I wonder how long it takes the moon to go through all of its phases.
I wonder what a full moon has to do with making people crazy.
I wonder how the moon affects the tides.
I wonder why only half of earth can see the sun at one time.
