Service Hours Begin This Term

For many, the concept of service hours is a new one. This post is written to help both students and parents understand how this works.

Grade four students are asked to earn a total of 8 service hours between now and early March. Service hours can be earned at home, school or at church. Regular chores should not be counted as service. Some ideas include gardening, snow removal, washing the car, vacuuming out the car, organizing recycling, child minding, chores over and above ones that are regularly done at home, and helping out at church. There may also be opportunities to earn service hours at school doing small jobs for teachers or picking up garbage outside.

The key is that students need to actively pursue opportunities rather than expect them to materialize.
Every time your child earns an hour of service time please send a note to school so the teachers can track them. We hope that this will help inspire our students to think beyond themselves and seek out opportunities to serve. Please contact your child's teacher if you have any questions.

4S & 4V - French Gesture Practice

Since the beginning of December, grade four students have been learning A LOT of new French vocabulary AND a lot of gestures to help them understand the meaning of the words. To assist students with learning all of the new vocabulary, videos are have been posted on the French blog for them to WATCH AND PRACTICE.

Weekly homework for all grade four French students is a minimum of 30 minutes of gesture practice per week.  It would be helpful if that time were spread over two or three days, rather than one straight half hour of practice.  Parents are asked to note practice times on the monthly calendar in their child's planner AND initial them. Weeks are graded from Thursday to Thursday. Planners will be checked every Thursday morning.

Parents: thank you in advance for your help and support!
Students: keep up the good work, as this will speed up our progress and allow us to start the play, 'Les Trois Petits Cochons!'

Earth-Keepers!

4V took some time last week to put some of our learning into action. We've spent more than two months learning all about habitats and communities. One thing we learned was about garbage and the damage that it can do to an animal's habitat as well as an animal's digestive system. It also looks bad to see litter on the roads, sidewalks, playground, soccer field, and flower beds. We split the class into 8 teams of three and each group cleaned up litter in a different area of the neighbourhood. We cleaned up the school yard as well as 162nd Street and over at Holy Cross. It felt good to do good work!

Awesome World Geography Videos!

Here are two videos that are helpful with learning world geography!  The tunes are VERY catchy, but the songs move at a pretty quick pace.  Be aware that the second video is more that 10 years old and that some country names have changed since then.  (It's still worth watching, though!)

4V - Coquitlam Watershed

What a difference a day can make!  4S spent the day yesterday at the Coquitlam Watershed in the POURING RAIN!  We were very fortunate today with glorious sunshine and not a drop of precipitation.  (Sorry, 4S!)  It was a great day, and we really enjoyed our time at the watershed!

Minute to Win It Chapel

Ms. Hofstede organized all grades 1-7 students into 42 mixed grade groups for a community building chapel this morning. What a blast we had!  First we all did an Oreo cookie challenge where we had to start with an Oreo cookie on our foreheads and use our face muscles to wiggle it into our mouths to earn points for our team. The second activity we did was group Pictionary. Everyone got a chance to participate and it was a lot of fun!

Upcoming Field Trip to the Coquitlam Watershed

Field Trip
to the
Coquitlam Watershed

4S on Monday, Sep. 29
4V on Tuesday, Sep. 30

from 8:55-2:30

Space is limited so we can only take two adults.
A bus operated by metro Vancouver will transport us.

Exploring the Watersheds & Discovering Connections

We plan to experience this special place and discover its unique treasures. This is a place where few people go, wildlife abounds, trees tower in mountains and valleys and water moves through natural landscapes to our water supply system.

We will hop on the ‘water’ bus, see the dam, learn how water gets from reservoir to tap and explore what makes watershed ecosystems important through fun, student-centered activities.

Students will make connections between healthy ecosystems and a healthy water supply. Once they've experienced the magic, they will be reminded of their special day, every time they turn on the tap!

First Week in 4S

2 - Suitable running style shoes for indoor P.E. - also known as 'indoor shoes.'
3 - A reusable water bottle.
4 - An earthquake comfort kit.

Thank you!

THIS MONDAY! International Literacy Awareness Day

On Monday, September 8 at 10:00 am, all Pre-K through grade 7 students will drop everything and read (or be read to) for at least 10 minutes.  Students will be encouraged to do this bare-footed to remind us that many children around the world lack much of we take for granted each and every day.  We are also encouraging students to bring in coins to support literacy at our sister schools in Honduras and Sierra Leone.

4V - "We Are" Project

It's hard to believe that we are on the cusp of our last month together in 4V!  Where has the time gone?  We have spent A LOT of time focusing on character development this year. In devotions we have explored a variety of different character attributes including responsibility, respect, self-control, patience, honesty, and creativity.  Themes of gratitude and empathy are two other big ideas we have spent a lot of time on.  This week we did our best to pull it all together and brainstorm all of the positive attributes that are represented in our class.  We're not saying that we have all mastered all of these traits, but we recognize their importance and the fact that we all have areas where we can improve!

A Message to the Grade Fours From Mrs. Stegeman

Greetings from Ms. Stegeman on "El Camino de Santiago"

Dear Grade Four,

I thought of you today as I was walking. I could hear frogs croaking, see storks flying above me and little mice kept crossing the path in front of me. Have you visited the pond lately? Is Raphael Yertle the Turtle's grave still there?

Walking the Camino is going very well. It is challenging walking 20-25 km a day. We often sleep in albergues (hostels) with people all over the world. One night we slept in one room with 96 other people. The scenery is spectacular.

Hope you have a great finish to your year.

Farewell Ceremony to Raphael Yertle the Turtle ... Love 4S

Raphael

Raphael was a great turtle. We would visit him every now and then. We will always remember the day we found him. Benji, Caeden and Amadeus found him. We were all so exited! He was so nice. We put him in our sanctuary for the night. Then he started making these adorable sounds like “EEP! EEP!”  We wish he wouldn’t have died. When we found out we were devastated. He was the cutest turtle ever. We will miss him dearly.  Rest in peace,  Raphael.

Welcome Back, 4V!

Welcome back!  I hope that you all had a restful time with family and friends, and were able to reflect on the best gift ever - Jesus!  Not everyone has returned to the classroom just yet, so we're not feeling 'whole' in 4V.  Looking ahead, there are lots of events, activities and units of study on the horizon for term two!  We've just begun a new novel - 'Shiloh' and are learning about weather in science class.  FSA (Foundational Skills Assessment) testing begins soon, so we are spending some time in math on getting comfortable with solving word problems.  Feel free to check out the link to the FSA practice tests.  The link can be found on the top right side of this blog under LINKS.
