Tynehead Hatchery

Grade 4L visited the Tynehead Hatchery today. The hatchery fieldtrip is always very interesting and fun, but today we got to witness how awesome God's creation is. Several volunteers at the hatchery took the big Spawners out of the holding tanks, killed them, and extracted the eggs from the females and the milt from the males. We were so lucky to be part of all this! The students saw and held salmon eggs, looked inside the dissected salmon to see the swim bladder, kidneys, etc. We were also lucky enough to see the Spawners in the river, building and guarding their nests. Here is what Peter Y and Justice wrote about our experience:

We saw Salmon at Tynehead. It was fun! We saw dead fish and live red salmon who were spawning. We saw a man knocking out a salmon with a mini bat. The female salmon were getting gutted by people. We got to touch the dead salmon when they were bleeding. We also got to hold salmon eggs!

Hope you enjoy the slideshow from our fieldtrip!
